Ja n 19 98 Formation of Disk Galaxies : Feedback and the Angular Momentum problem

چکیده
Tree-SPH, numerical simulations of disk galaxy formation in a cosmological context are presented. For the " passive " variant of such simulations, i.e. simulations not including the effects of stellar feedback processes, it is found that the resulting disk " galaxies " are far too small and specific angular momentum deficient, by about a factor of 8 in size and about a factor of 20 in specific angular momentum, compared to real disk galaxies. Two routes towards solving this disk galaxy size and angular momentum problem are discussed: 1) Stellar feedback processes in cold and dense, proto-galactic gas clouds and 2) Relatively early reheating and reionization of the Universe. Test simulations are presented, indicating that the first approach is a likely solution to the problem, whereas the second holds less promise, at least for large (Milky Way sized) disk galaxies.

Star Formation, Supernovae Feedback and the Angular Momentum Problem in Numerical Cdm Cosmogony: Half Way There?
We present a smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulation that reproduces a galaxy that is a moderate facsimile of those observed. The primary failing point of previous simulations of disk formation, namely excessive transport of angular momentum from gas to dark matter, is ameliorated by the inclusion of a supernova feedback algorithm that allows energy to persist in the model ISM for a per...
متن کاملThe Angular Momentum Problem in Cosmological Simulations of Disk Galaxy Formation
We conduct a systematic study of the angular momentum problem in numerical simulations of disk galaxy formation. We investigate the role of numerical resolution using a semi-cosmological setup which combines an efficient use of the number of particles in an isolated halo while preserving the hierarchical build-up of the disk through the merging of clumps. We perform the same simulation varying ...
متن کاملOn the Origin of Exponential Galaxy Disks
One of the most important unresolved issues for galaxy formation theory is to understand the origin of exponential galaxy disks. We use a disk galaxy evolution model to investigate whether galaxies with exponential surface brightness profiles can be produced in a cosmologically motivated framework for disk galaxy formation. Our model follows the accretion, cooling, and ejection of baryonic mass...
متن کاملThe Origin of the Density Distribution of Disk Galaxies: A New Problem for the Standard Model of Disk Formation
We present new models for the formation of disk galaxies that improve upon previous models by following the detailed accretion and cooling of the baryonic mass, and by using realistic distributions of specific angular momentum. Under the assumption of detailed angular momentum conservation the disks that form have density distributions that are more centrally concentrated than an exponential. W...
متن کاملThe Angular Momentum of Gas in Proto-galaxies: I – Implications for the Formation of Disk Galaxies
We use non-radiative N-body/SPH simulations of structure formation in a ΛCDM cosmology to compare the angular momentum distributions of dark matter and gas in a large sample of halos. We show that the two components have identical spin parameter distributions and that their angular momentum distributions within individual halos are very similar, all in excellent agreement with standard assumpti...
